When the founding fathers of the United States formed the union and wrote the Constitution one of the things they never intended to happen was for an elected position to become a full time job. Some actually expressed this desire in writing. I am aware it could be argued that with the size and population of the country at that time there was no need for this to be a full time job, but now thing have changed. My personal opinion is that it wasn’t necessarily the size and population of the country at the time that they were thinking of. They knew if an elected position ever became a full time job, government would eventually turn into what they had seen and experienced in Europe. If that was what they were thinking, boy, were they ever right! But even in their worst fears I don’t think they could have envisioned just how corrupt and dysfunctional our elected officials have become. Today we hardly take notice anymore because it has become the norm. We accept it as just another everyday problem that we can do nothing about.
The root cause of the problem is that our elected officials have completely lost touch with the needs of the people and the country. They have become so caught up in their own greed that they are blinded to everything except power, money, & control. They have forgotten that their job is to do what is best for the country and the majority of the people. In essence, they have become mini-dictators.
Two major things have happened to our two-party system. First, they are consumed with power struggles with each other. Second, each party has become internally polarized. The Democrats are split from just left of center to extreme left. The Republicans are split from just right of center to extreme right. Unfortunately, the extremes are in the controlling majority in both parties’. (Of course, they prefer the terms good liberals and good conservatives in an attempt to take the sting out of what they really are.) Both parties have decided that keeping their respective parties in power is more important than governing the country. And the saddest part is that they both believe that the end justifies the means.
History has recorded that every great nation & civilization was brought down by corruption of its leadership; not by the citizens. I have no doubt that history will record that no nation ever became so great so fast and failed as quickly as did the United States of America. Some great nations existed for thousands of years before they collapsed. We are just 225 years old and already we are imploding. And regardless of who writes history, they should write that our elected politicians destroyed the greatest nation ever.
